Where it is
Sign in to Search Console for the property that matches how your site is served, https with or without www. In the left menu choose Performance, then Search results. The generative-AI performance report sits inside that screen, alongside the ordinary web results. It shows the impressions your pages earned inside Google's AI features: AI Overviews and AI Mode.
If you do not see it, the property may be too new. Or you may be looking at a property that does not match the served hostname. Fix the property before you draw any conclusion from an empty report.
This is the first thing I open on a free call. It is your data, in your account. It costs nothing.
What it counts
An impression is recorded when a page of yours is shown as a source inside an AI answer. The report is narrower than the ordinary Search results report in four ways. Each one matters when someone shows you the number.
- Impressions only. There is no click column. The person read the answer and mostly did not click anything. That is why the report exists.
- No queries. You cannot see which questions produced the impressions. You can see which pages earned them.
- Google only. Nothing from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Claude appears here. Bing has its own report. The others have none.
- One count per answer. If two of your pages appear as sources in the same AI answer, that is one impression, not two.
How to read it over 90 days
Set the date range to the last 90 days. Compare it with the 90 days before. Then look at three things in order.
- The page list. Which pages are being lifted. It is often not the home page and usually not the page you would have guessed.
- The trend over 90 days. The daily line is noisy. Google changes what the features show without notice. A traffic graph nine days after a launch means nothing. The same applies here.
- The gap between the two reports. Pages that earn ordinary impressions and no AI impressions are being retrieved but not lifted. That list is the work order.
Export the 90-day figure with the date and keep it. The next quarter's number means nothing without it.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether the answer said something true about you. It cannot tell you whether a competitor was named in the same answer. It cannot tell you what happened on any engine that is not Google. For those, the only method is to ask the engines a fixed set of questions on a schedule and record who they name.
That is what AI search tracking does, at A$249 a month + GST: a 30-prompt panel re-run weekly across five engines, with this report and your Bing Citation Share pulled into one page each month. How I use both, and what I refuse to count, is on how I measure.
